With the Blackmores Sydney Running Festival on Sunday 20 September, what better way to get into shape than with an outdoor workout at one of Sydney's most beautiful parks or beaches?
Ambassador for the Blackmores Sydney Running Festival, Jesinta Campbell, loves exercising outdoors and frequently takes advantage of Sydney's plethora of great outdoor training spots.
“One of my favourite places to exercise outdoors is the iconic Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk. Whether you walk it or run it, if you are in Sydney you simply have to experience this. The Royal Botanic Gardens is another beautiful place to run and Balmoral Beach is stunning as well.
“That is the beauty of Sydney. You can get around really easily and see the city's incredible sights better than if you were driving or taking the ferry,” Ms Campbell said.
Here are some of Sydney's best outdoor training parks and soft sand beaches where you can work up a sweat ahead of the Blackmores Sydney Running Festival.
- Centennial Park is an outdoor training enthusiast's dream. Just 10 minutes from the city, the park is set over 189 hectares of beautifully maintained grassland offering an inner-city oasis where you can cycle, run, golf, or even horse ride
- Barangaroo Point Reserve is Sydney's newest harbour foreshore park. Set on a sprawling six hectares, the park offers bushwalks, grassed areas and walking and cycling paths all with panoramic views of Sydney's beautiful harbour
- Observatory Hill Park, Millers Point is one of the most picturesque training spots in Sydney due to its stunning location on Observatory Hill that offers sweeping views of Sydney Harbour and the Harbour Bridge. The park provides a tennis court and three basic fitness stations that are often packed with locals and workers hoping to train with a view
- Running the Cronulla Sand Dunes is a rite of passage to all Sutherland Shire locals and a sure-fire way to get your heart pumping and your legs shaking. The mighty dunes stand at a gruelling 45 degree incline so expect to sweat and, if needs be, scramble on hands and knees to reach the top
- The iconic Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk can be enjoyed running or walking and will see you traverse along 6kms of beautiful coastal paths at the edge of Sydney's eastern suburbs. Starting at Bondi Icebergs, you will run past some of Sydney's most beautiful beaches and parks, and several staircases will ensure you get your heart rate pumping
- The Manly to North Head run is approximately 10kms long starting from the Manly Ferry Wharf and heading along the esplanade past Shelly beach. North Head Scenic Drive will then take you out to the heads where you are rewarded with impressive views out to sea and the harbour
- For those true adventurers The Coast Track is a 26km trail run along the rugged coastline of the Royal National Park that simply cannot be missed. This trail will take you along cliffs, beaches and escarpments with some of the most stunning coastal views in Sydney. You might even spot a migrating humpback whale
- Rushcutters Bay Park, situated right on the bay, is a relaxing waterfront park that provides a range of outdoor gym equipment that looks directly onto the harbour. The park is much loved in the local community for its dog-friendly regulations, so your furry, four-legged friends are welcome there too
- The Bay Run is a 7km loop around the tranquil Iron Cove that takes you through the waterfront suburbs of Rozelle, Lilyfield, Haberfield, Five Dock, Rodd Point and Russell Lea
- Bondi Beach is Sydney's most iconic stretch of sand and surf and is the perfect spot for a short 1 kilometre soft sand run. Plenty of locals take advantage of this beautiful outdoor training location and each morning Bondi is filled with early risers making laps of this iconic spot.
